The Official Story

Oziri terrorists released a weaponized pathogen at Azure Reach Resort during the diplomatic season. There were no survivors - the pathogen was 100% lethal, killing all 5,800 guests, staff, and townspeople. The site remains permanently sealed due to environmental contamination. The bodies were too dangerous to recover. Oziri denies involvement but evidence suggests their culpability.

This story is a lie. And it started a war.

The Road to War

The Azure Reach frame job didn’t just hide a crime - it lit the fuse that exploded into the Oziri Conflict.

Pirate raids had been escalating for years, but Azure Reach provided moral outrage: Oziri portrayed not just as raiders, but as bioterrorists willing to massacre civilians on neutral ground. The “5,800 dead” became a rallying cry. Public opinion shifted from “Oziri is a nuisance” to “Oziri must be destroyed.”

The joint Mesulean-Atrunean invasion that followed was the most devastating war in Abecean history:

What Actually Happened

Project SUBVERSION

Years before the outbreak, a rogue cell within the Atrunean Intelligence Agency initiated an unauthorized bioweapon program. Their goal: develop a pathogen that would make infected individuals susceptible to subliminal commands while appearing neurologically normal.

The plan was to infect foreign leaders and diplomats at Azure Reach, then control them remotely once they returned home. As Atruna’s power waned before the rising might of Mesulea and Nuilea, these zealous nationalists saw mind control as their only path to maintaining relevance.

When Emperor Tashen IV discovered the program, he ordered its immediate termination.

The Release

Senior Intelligence Officer Valen Morrec refused to accept the shutdown. A fanatical nationalist, he believed Atruna’s survival depended on the program’s success.

The scientific team refused his demands to deploy the pathogen - it was incomplete, with severe uncontrolled side effects. Morrec responded by executing four scientists and fleeing with viable samples.

On Founding Day, 12 ABY, Morrec infiltrated Azure Reach’s environmental systems and released the pathogen. Every person in the resort complex was exposed.

The Horror

The infected did not die. The pathogen stabilized, leaving approximately 4,100 people alive but irreversibly insane. They have remained at Azure Reach for over seven decades, aging dramatically slower than normal - most appear to have aged only 15-20 years physically.

The military quarantine’s real purpose: contain the infected while they’re studied for the pathogen’s anti-aging properties.

The Death of Emperor Tashen IV

Emperor Tashen IV, who shut down Project SUBVERSION, died under suspicious circumstances within a year of the incident. He had moral qualms about framing Oziri. Those qualms proved fatal. His son, the current Emperor, is far more malleable - and now a willing participant in the Immortality Consortium.

Valen Morrec Lives

The AIA’s official report claims Morrec died in the outbreak. He didn’t.

Morrec retained far more cognitive function than other infected. His military and intelligence training made him terrifyingly effective even in his twisted state. Over decades, he rose to dominate the infected population, coordinating their movements with tactical precision.

The AIA eventually discovered he was alive and, after failed attempts to eliminate him, negotiated a dark bargain: Morrec helps them study the infected in exchange for supplies and equipment.

What the AIA doesn’t know: Morrec has been planning his escape for decades. He’s excavated a tunnel nearly to the perimeter (using equipment an infected technician modified from AIA-supplied communications gear). He’s made contact with Oziri pirates via tight-beam transmission. Certain Oziri power players are in direct contact with him, biding their time.

Within the next year or two, Valen Morrec will attempt to escape, reach an Oziri extraction ship, and release proof of the entire conspiracy. If he succeeds:

A secret consortium of powerful elites from across the system - Atrunean, Mesulean, Nuilean, Freehold, even some Oziri lords who know they were framed - now collaborate on immortality research. National allegiances mean nothing compared to the promise of eternal life.
