Nuilea

The second gas giant in the Abeceus system. A rising great power built on scarcity discipline.

Planetary Characteristics

  • Jovian mass: 1.16
  • Jovian radius: 0.87
  • Denser but smaller than Mesulea
  • Nearly double Mesulea’s surface gravity — makes atmospheric operations extremely difficult and dangerous
  • 87 moons
  • Population: ~1.4 billion (across moons and orbital infrastructure)

Background

Major colonization began ~50 years after Mesulea, with fewer resources devoted to the effort. Nuilea’s greater distance from the inner system, lack of accessible helium-3, and Mesulea’s head start left it in a subordinate position for centuries.

This history of scarcity forged a distinct national character: utilitarian, disciplined, and ruthlessly practical.

The Scarcity Identity

Nuilean state identity is defined by one sentence:

“We will not be strangled by someone else’s resource.”

Nuilean strategy is not about outbuilding Mesulea symmetrically. It’s about breaking the terms of dependence through targeted programs, asymmetry, and political ruthlessness.

Orbital Infrastructure

Every inhabited moon in the Nuilean system has some form of orbital facility—the scale varies with the settlement’s size and function.

MoonOrbital FacilityPurpose
KorvusMassive dock complexBulk industrial imports/exports, freighter traffic
VarekLarge dock complexPassenger traffic, high-value cargo, military logistics
LedovMedium facilityIce hauler operations, water distribution
TervokMedium facilityOre export, refinery support
VostokMilitary stationFleet staging, customs inspection, MRN node

Smaller settlements across the 87 moons have proportionally smaller facilities—ranging from full stations to simple docking platforms.

The Two Pillars

The Nuilean system is built around two major moons that together house the vast majority of the population and economic activity.

MoonRolePopulation
VarekCapital, government, services, agriculture, specialized manufacturing~500 million
KorvusHeavy industry, shipyards, munitions, tritium breeding~450 million

Varek (Capital)

The first moon colonized—chosen because it offered the best balance of resources for early settler survival: accessible water ice, carbon compounds for agriculture, and stable geology for habitats. That early advantage shaped everything that followed.

Today Varek is:

  • Government seat: Legislature, executive offices, Bastion Prime (military command)
  • Agricultural center: Hydroponics, vat protein, algae farms (infrastructure built here first)
  • Service economy: Banks, law firms, media, education
  • Specialized manufacturing: Pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, precision instruments

Character: Functional brutalism, government presence, scarcity discipline as cultural virtue.

Korvus (Industrial Heartland)

As Nuilea industrialized and scaled up, heavy industry migrated to Korvus over time. The moon offered better mineral deposits, more space, and—critically—distance from the capital population.

Tritium breeding was built here specifically because it was unpopular to co-locate nuclear facilities with Varek residents. This set the precedent: dangerous, dirty, or unpopular industry goes to Korvus.

Today Korvus hosts:

  • The Orbital Yards: System’s largest shipbuilding operation by volume
  • Surface foundries: Hull plating, reactor components, armor
  • Tritium breeding: Lithium blanket reactors for fuel independence
  • Munitions complex: Missiles, drones, explosives, “civilian-spec” exports
  • Mining operations: Supplemented by Tervok (rare earths) and Ludrion (heavy metals, specialty materials)

Character: Constant industry, harsh labor conditions, constrained unions.

Atmospheric Infrastructure

Poena Station

An atmospheric platform hovering within Nuilea’s upper atmosphere—similar in concept to Aeolus Station on Mesulea, but operating under far more brutal conditions due to Nuilea’s crushing gravity.

Poena serves two functions:

1. Project BLUESPIRE Operations

The command center for BLUESPIRE spire-harvesting operations. When fusion pulses are detonated and the mazer arrays shape a harvestable column, Poena coordinates the skimmer runs.

The Pilots: Elite BLUESPIRE skimmer pilots are the glamorous face of Nuilean He-3 independence. They’re daredevils, extremely well-paid, and carry significant cultural cachet. In Nuilean entertainment media, they’re portrayed as male sex symbols—macho, fearless, cooler than military pilots. “Riding the spire” is slang for taking extreme risks with style.

2. Traditional He-3 Extraction

Beneath the pilot quarters and mission control, Poena also runs conventional atmospheric mining operations—and this is where the glamour ends.

The Prisoners: Enslaved convicts fitted with gravity-survival implants work the brutal extraction rigs. The implants allow human bodies to function under Nuilea’s crushing atmospheric pressure, but the process is invasive and the work is lethal. Prisoners are hidden from public view; their existence is an open secret that Nuilean society prefers not to discuss.

  • Character: Split personality. The upper decks are gleaming, high-tech, filled with cocky pilots and mission specialists. The lower decks are industrial horror—dark, hot, and deadly.
  • Population: ~25,000 (station crew, pilots, support staff) + classified number of prisoners

Supporting Moons

Settlement on smaller moons only occurs when specific resources or strategic positioning justify the logistics cost.

Ledov (Ice Moon)

Massive water ice deposits critical for life support and reaction mass across the Nuilean system.

  • Purpose: Ice mining and processing at industrial scale
  • Significance: Water is life—and fuel. Supplies the fleet and civilian infrastructure.
  • Population: ~15 million

Tervok (Rare Earth Mining)

Concentrated deposits of rare earth elements that Korvus lacks—supplements local mining with essential materials for electronics and specialized alloys.

  • Purpose: Rare earth extraction and on-site refining
  • Significance: Reduces dependence on imports for raw materials
  • Population: ~8 million

Vostok (Outer Perimeter)

A moon in a much farther orbit than the others—positioned for defense, early warning, and communications. Hosts military installations and a major Mazer Relay Network node.

  • Purpose: Fleet staging, early warning sensors, MRN relay, customs checkpoint
  • Significance: First line of awareness for anything approaching the Nuilean system
  • Population: ~3 million (mostly military)

Helium-3 Dependence

Nuilea’s crushing gravity makes atmospheric He-3 extraction far more dangerous and expensive than on Mesulea. To mitigate Mesulean market dominance, Nuilea:

  • Built a small domestic He-3 industry through extreme measures (prisoner labor on Poena Station)
  • Developed Project BLUESPIRE for induced atmospheric harvesting
  • Imposes tariffs on foreign helium-3
  • Still cannot meet local demand—giving Mesulea ongoing economic leverage
